This book was great. After college I had no idea what I was doing, and though I took advice from a lot of people, there was a lot of confusion left over. This book really helped me get my head on straight, and the language was so simple and straight forward that it saved me from a lot of head ache!

CREDIT MANAGEMENT KIT FOR DUMMIES provides considerable basic but practical information about credit reporting and credit repair which is likely to be particularly useful to those who are new to establishing credit and checking their credit reports. Those of us who have been dealing with credit-related issues and receiving our credit reports for years may only need to skim some of the chapters, and to only read in full the ones that address our particular concerns.

Author Steve Bucci discusses in detail a wide variety of concerns in 23 chapters which include such topics as: understanding credit scores, credit reporting, protecting and building credit, dealing with negative credit, creating a spending and savings plan, and polishing credit reports. He also includes chapters pertaining to working with collectors and lawyers, and dealing with credit in relation to financial emergencies, mortgages, bankruptcy, and identity theft. The book ends with chapters on ten tips – ten consumer protections, ten tips for achieving stellar credit, and ten ways to successfully manage financial emergencies.

Although he is sometimes repetitious (e.g. check your credit reports several times a year!), Bucci’s writing is well-organized, easy to understand, specific, and oriented toward practical action. Personally, I most benefited from the dozens if not hundreds of web site links and agency listings which he recommends, since differentiating the reputable resources online from the unreputable ones is not an easy task. His specific suggestions for building and repairing credit – such as locating free secured credit cards and taking loans against passbook savings – are also likely to be helpful to readers who are struggling with poor credit ratings (which for many of us are due to circumstances such as medical expenses out of our control).

The book also includes a cd loaded with financial shareware and freeware, copies of relevant legislation, sample credit reports, and templates for writing letters to creditors.

CREDIT MANAGEMENT KIT FOR DUMMIES is a very thorough resource for learning the basics of credit management and receiving pointers for further sources of legitimate help. Those readers dealing with debt issues related to such specific concerns as identity theft, mortgages and foreclosure or bankruptcy may need to consult books dedicated solely to such topics, and most likely a credit counselor and/or attorney as well. But this book is an excellent beginning.

I have always been pleased with the “For Dummies” series of books, and this one is no different. The book is divided into five parts, with the first part being an introduction to credit, and why it is important to take care of one’s credit in a tightened financial market. The second section is all about personal credit, including understanding credit reports and monitoring. Part three discusses how to create solid credit during various stages of life. Part four teaches the reader how to deal with negative credit, and part five is the “part of tens” which is featured in every “For Dummies” book. Overall, this book is well written, and Mr. Bucci seems be be knowledgeable about the current state of the financial industry. His main point seems to be that even if you have “good” credit, in the current economy, “good” is not always “good enough.” Consumers today need to be proactive in managing their credit scores to ensure that the “magic number” stays as high as possible. On the other hand, if your credit is already suffering, and you need information on repairing your credit report, and raising your FICO score, you may want to check out Credit Repair Kit For Dummies
